Abstract

In the digital age, disconnection can seem like a difficult process. Although media resistance isn’t a new phenomena, the way digital media is embedded in everyday life makes it more difficult than ever before. This study aims to examine the day to day changes experienced by young adults who have decided to disconnect from digital media through qualitative semi-structured interviews. The target demographic for our study was students between the ages of 20-26 in Uppsala, which resulted in 7 interviews. To guide the analysis, we asked the questions: Which strategies do the respondents use to decrease their digital media use? How do the respondents describe their experiences of digital disconnection relative to everyday routines, environments and identity? How do the respondents express norms and values relating to digital media in everyday life? To answer these questions we use the theory of reverse media domestication to contextualise and explore the different areas of mediated everyday life. The results of the study demonstrate the complex nature of modern digital media and the individual challenges that arise due to both disconnection and connection. Availability, presence, and ability to do practical every day tasks were commonly discussed concepts in the interviews. This is related to the complexity of media domestication in modern life, as digital media is becoming more and more mobile and the previous relations to media are being renegotiated.
