The role of the Regia and the Domus publica in the priesthood of the pontifex maximus at the end of the Roman Republic. Remarks on the spatial inscription of pontifical auctoritas
Abstract
This presentation aims to clearly distinguish between the two buildings that were the regia and the domus publica in Rome at the end of the Republic and explain the reasons for their frequent confusion in scholarship. It also seeks to clarify their respective functions, as a ritual space on the one hand and a priestly residence on the other, and to question their role in the spatial inscription of the authority of the pontifex maximus, the main figure associated with these spaces, at the end of the Republic.
