Abstract

These and other recent toned cyanotype collages engage with the possibilities of the process - exploring composition through collaging negatives and creating negative masks which break up the image into fragments or multiple perspectives on the same scene. Abandoned domestic furniture provides a loose frame and support for the work – the marks of domestic life clearly visible on the surface of the wooden forms – making kind of punctuation around the image. Reference points in the work include Louise Bourgoise ‘Femme Maison’ and Annie Ernaux collection of observations ‘Exteriors.’ The image is created from one of many domestic 35mm photographs taken during lockdown (here of a tray on the kitchen drying rack.) Using the layout of a children’s alphabet book as a graphic starting point for the composition and playing with the idea of the semiotics of the everyday. Included in ‘Mother Curator’ at the Reid Gallery, Glasgow School of Art.
