La educación científica en la obra del jesuita chileno Felipe Gómez de Vidaurre
Abstract
The article examines the unpublished work Conversaciones de un padre americano con sus hijos Caupolicán y Colocolo by Chilean Jesuit Felipe Gómez de Vidaurre, written during his exile in Italy. The text outlines a formative project for Creole youth, combining moral, civil, scientific, and agricultural education. Divided into two volumes–one on physical, moral, and scientific education, and the other on agriculture and botany–it adapts classical and modern knowledge to the Chilean colonial context. Through dialogue, Vidaurre presents science as a tool for progress, cultural emancipation, and Creole identity, emphasizing scientific agriculture as the foundation of development and autonomy against the colonial model.
