Mellan världskrig och motorisering : Svenska tankar om kavalleriet efter första världskriget, 1919–1925
Abstract
The First World War had an immense impact on military thinking and development during the interwar period and onward. One of the arms of service that saw the greatest change following the war was the cavalry. The technological advancements in terms of firepower, alternative modes of transportation and the stalemate on the western front resulted in that, across the globe the purpose of horseback cavalry was called into question – resulting in different solutions to the perceived problems it faced. This essay explores Swedish cavalry development during the early interwar period. Through a case study of the Swedish cavalry this essay seeks to expand the understanding of this arm of service as well as the ability of the Swedish armed forces, Krigsmakten, to learn from the conflicts of the early 20th century. Using the theory of Organizational Learning, as formulated by Chris Argyris och Donald A. Schön, this essay explores how the Swedish military developed following one of the transformative eras of modern military history.
