Abstract
This article builds on the scholarly thesis according to which the human body was conceived by Roman jurists as invested with an original sacrality. Taking this premise as established, the analysis turns to a selection of classical sources broadly concerned with regimes of legal belonging, in which the free person—when mistakenly regarded as a slave—is juxtaposed with res sacrae or religiosae.
