Abstract

This paper aims to reconstruct distinct aspects of John Dewey’s understanding of technology. Taking Larry Hickman’s well-known interpretation as a starting point, although taking some distance from it, we will argue that technology occupies the role of an explanatory resource rather than a primary issue in Dewey. Despite this, it is possible to reconstruct a philosophy of technology from some of his ideas. In particular, we will focus on what we will consider as the religious dimension of his understanding of technology and we will argue that there is in his work a certain faith in the possibilities of technology, but that it is complemented or moderated by the exercise of a political critique of actually existing science and technology.
