Abstract

Today, urban archaeological areas are defined as places where public (urban) spaces intersect with and integrate into archaeological sites. These areas require protection through specialized methods to be transmitted to future generations. Numerous documents, publications, and projects characterize urban archaeological areas as interdisciplinary fields, highlighting the necessity of coordinated processes carried out by interdisciplinary teams during excavation, conservation, planning, management, and presentation. Within this framework, this study aims to examine how disciplinary perspectives shape these processes in urban archaeological areas and to conceptualize a sustainable and effective archaeology-based interdisciplinary model for Türkiye. Accordingly, the main objective is to define the roles of various disciplines in improving coordination among them and to propose an interdisciplinary management model that ensures the protection of urban archaeological areas. The study is structured into five chapters and is based on comprehensive analyses of international and legal documents, publications (110) and theses, as well as a survey conducted with experts (107). In addition, case studies from Bulgaria and Türkiye were examined to evaluate the functionality and effectiveness of interdisciplinarity. Based on the findings, a model is proposed in which data produced by archaeologists are processed through collaboration with architects, city planners, and specialists from supporting disciplines. In this model, archaeologists assume a central advisory role, and all processes are conducted under the framework of an urban archaeology unit. By addressing the lack of holistic research in this field, the study offers a systematic and structured methodological framework that facilitates the transfer of theoretical knowledge into practice.
