Abstract

This study examines the use of digital devices in schools and their integration into the framework of the learning process. The 1:1 computing policy in schools makes pupils’ constant use of internet-connected computers a game changer. This study relates how teachers perceive the effect of digital devices on their overall teaching process (pedagogy) as well as the effects on pupils’ learning. How IT can improve pupils’ engagement and motivation in the learning process is contrasted with an “element of distraction”. The study also looks at how the role of the teacher is affected by the integration of digitization as well as its outlook as “disruptive technology”. Qualitative interviews were the basis for the study and were conducted at a middle school in central Sweden. The results reflect the limits of use based on teacher’s perceptions and need for solutions to counteract the often-distracting nature of digital tools in education.
