5. The Global Tumor Phase Map
Abstract
The Global Tumor Phase Map proposes a dynamic framework for classifying tumors according to their behavior in time rather than solely by morphology, stage, or molecular profile. Building upon principles of tumor dynamics, effective biological time, and systems-based oncology, this work introduces a phase-space interpretation in which tumors are understood as evolving trajectories moving across distinct dynamic regimes. Within this framework, tumor behavior is described through the interaction of dynamic change (Δ), biological time density (τᵦ), structural geometry, and systemic coupling with the host. The model argues that clinically meaningful phenomena such as stability, progression, resistance, and collapse emerge from transitions between regimes rather than from linear growth alone. The Global Tumor Phase Map aims to provide a conceptual bridge between theoretical oncology and clinical reasoning by offering a language that integrates temporal dynamics, geometric organization, and adaptive evolution. Rather than replacing existing classifications, it seeks to contextualize them within a broader dynamic architecture capable of explaining heterogeneity in treatment response and disease trajectories. This work is presented as a theoretical and conceptual contribution designed to stimulate empirical testing, longitudinal analysis, and collaborative exploration. Its long-term objective is to support a dynamic, trajectory-oriented vision of oncology in which therapeutic decisions are interpreted relative to evolving system states rather than static measurements.
