Chinese version of the Seniors Empowerment and Advocacy in Patient Safety(SEAPS) scale and validation of reliability and validity in elderly stroke patients
Abstract
ObjectiveTo adapt the Seniors Empowerment and Advocacy in Patient Safety(SEAPS) scale into the local context and to validate its among elderly stroke patients,so as to provide a reliable tool for assessing the level of self⁃advocacy in older patients.MethodsThe Brislin translation model was used for translation, back⁃translation, and cultural adaptation of the SEAPS. A convenience sample of 431 elderly stroke patients from a Grade A tertiary hospital in Wuxi city was surveyed to test the reliability and validity of the scale.ResultsExploratory factor analysis extracted four factors:behavior, self⁃efficacy, outcome efficacy, and attitude, with a cumulative variance contribution rate of 83.495%. Item analysis showed correlations between each item and the total score.Content validity analysis indicated that the item⁃level content validity index(I⁃CVI) ranged from 0.83 to 1.00,and the scale⁃level content validity index(S⁃CVI/Ave) was 0.968.Confirmatory factor analysis demonstrated a good model fit for the scale. The scale's Cronbach's α coefficient was 0.966,and the test⁃retest reliability was 0.916.ConclusionsThe Chinese version of the SEAPS has good psychometric properties. It can be effectively used to assess the level of self⁃advocacy in elderly stroke patients.
