Developing computational thinking in Math
Abstract
This master's thesis focuses on the development of computational thinking in mathematics at the primary school level, specifically in the 3rd grade. The aim of the thesis is to identify how elements of algorithmic thinking, as part of computational thinking, are developed in mathematics lessons and how teachers perceive and integrate these concepts into their practice. The theoretical part defines the key concepts of computational and algorithmic thinking, analyzes Czech educational strategies with emphasis on the Framework Educational Programme for Basic Education (revisions 2021 and 2025), and presents international approaches from Slovakia, Finland, and England. The empirical part applies a qualitative research design combining an analysis of mathematics textbooks for the 3rd grade with semi- structured interviews with primary school teachers. Textbook analysis revealed tasks that foster algorithmic thinking, especially those focused on step-by-step problem solving, pattern recognition, and logical reasoning. The thesis offers insights into how mathematical and computational thinking can be effectively connected in classroom practice to support students' logical and systematic reasoning.
