Abstract

This paper synthesizes research on peer assessment in higher education to identify key design principles that support validity, reliability, and meaningful student learning (Topping, 1998, p.2; Falchikov & Goldfinch, 2000, p.6; Alqassab et al., 2023, p.2). Drawing on prior empirical and theoretical work, it examines how factors such as randomization, clarity of evaluation criteria, number of peer reviews, anonymity, formative versus summative feedback, and instructor moderation influence the effectiveness of peer assessment practices (van Zundert et al., 2010, p.5; Fleckney et al., 2024, p.11). Prior research highlights trust in self and psychological safety as important moderators of peer assessment processes and outcomes (Alqassab et al., 2023, p. 25), while other research factors such as trust and students motivation as influencers of the success of implementing peer assessment approaches as a part of pedagogical discourse (Guo et al., 2023, p.16). The paper also discusses student motivation towards peer assessment is influenced by trust, psychology, and common concerns associated with peer evaluation (Guo et al., 2023, p. 2; Aisarova & Amangazina, 2025, p.4), highlighting conditions under which peer assessment can function as a rigorous and scalable pedagogical strategy. The contribution is intended to inform instructors, instructional designers, and educational technology developers seeking to implement or evaluate peer assessment systems in post-secondary contexts. Kritik360, a technology-enabled peer assessment platform used by over 200,000 users across 250+ institutions, serves as a practical implementation case study, demonstrating how evidence-based design principles can be operationalized at scale to reduce instructor grading workload while improving student engagement and critical thinking skills (van Helden et al., 2023, p.2 ; Craig & Kay, 2025, p.3).
