Options for accessible accomodation for people with disabilities while studying at university
Abstract
This bachelor thesis focuses on housing options for university students with physical disabilities. The theoretical part explains key terms such as physical disability, barrier-free accommodation, and personal assistance. It is based on the social model of disability and the independent living model, which show the importance of environment and support systems. The aim of the research was to find out how students with physical disabilities choose where to live during their studies, what difficulties they face, and what would help them live more independently. The research was based on four semi-structured interviews. The findings show that the biggest problems are lack of personal assistance, high costs of care, and weak support from institutions. Most students have to live with their parents, which limits their independence. The students also gave useful suggestions - for example, having assistants at student dormitories, increasing the care allowance, or better support for flexible study programs. This work shows that accessibility is not only about buildings, but also about creating a system that gives all students equal chances to study and live with dignity.
