Toulouse Lautrec Lithograph Portfolio
Abstract
This portfolio is a collection of twelve reproduction prints of lithographs by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, accompanied by an introductory essay written by Carl Zigrosser, the Curator of Prints at the Philadelphia Museum of Art at the time of this portfolio’s publication in 1946. The cover art for this collection features a minstrel performer in blackface. Minstrel performances perpetuated harmful stereotypes, presenting Black people as comedic caricatures and reinforcing racist social hierarchies. Lautrec repeatedly used this minstrel motif. It can be seen in the bottom right corner of May Milton (2025.115.9) and in his Circus series of prints (2025.117.25). Individual Digital Kenyon entries for the prints within this collection can be found at the following links: La Modiste, [the milliner] Monsieur et Dame La Loge a Mascaron Doré, [the box with the gilded mask] Étude de Femme, [study of a woman] Yvette Guilbert Pourquoi Pas, [why not?] Á Ménilmontant, de Bruant, [In Ménilmontant, by Bruant] Confetti May Milton La Troupe de Mlle, Églantine, [Miss Eglantine’s Troupe] The Chap Book Jane Avril
