Abstract

Extended Range Twin-engine Operations (ETOPS), currently referred to by International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) as Extended Diversion Time Operations (EDTO), impose strict operational, performance, and fuel-planning requirements on commercial flights operating at significant distances from suitable aerodromes. The correct assessment of diversion strategies, critical fuel reserves, and regulatory compliance is therefore a key responsibility in flight dispatch planning. This thesis presents the development and validation of an EDTO flight dispatching tool integrated into Dynamo3, an aircraft trajectory generation and optimization software. The objective of the work is to automate the identification of EDTO applicability, the determination of EDTO route segments and planning points, the selection of the Critical Point (CP), and the computation of diversion fuel requirements in accordance with ICAO Doc 10085 and Annex 6. The implemented tool models multiple diversion scenarios, including one-engine-inoperative (OEI) depressurization, and engine-failure-only cases, and evaluates each scenario at all relevant Equal Time Points (ETPs) to identify the most fuel-critical condition. Based on these simulations, the software computes the EDTO critical fuel reserve, performs fuel sufficiency checks, and determines whether additional fuel is required beyond standard dispatch fuel. Weather validity windows for EDTO alternates are also calculated to support dispatch minima verification. The tool is validated using real operational flight plans corresponding to long-haul EDTO flights. The results show that the developed methodology consistently identifies EDTO relevant route segments and produces diversion and fuel-planning outputs that are coherent with operational documentation, while highlighting expected differences arising from performance assumptions and optimization strategies. The work demonstrates the feasibility of integrating regulatory-compliant EDTO dispatch logic into trajectory-based planning tools and provides a foundation for future extensions toward operational deployment.
