The Somatic Regulatory Theory Framework

Abstract

I believe that the current Psychoanalytical models are not only incomplete, but foundationally faulty. The question is not "What does the psychic structure mean?" but rather "What regulatory function does the psychic structure serve?" Life survives best within systems that successfully organize regulation, while Cognition functions to symbolically mediate that regulation. Cognition does not generate regulation. In my framework I attempt to explain how embodied regulation becomes symbolically mediated and socially stabilized, producing subjectivity and power.
