Abstract

Technical debt is a common problem in large enterprise applications. The problem stems from solutions that have been implemented to quickly solve a problem, without thinking about how the quick decision impacts the codebase in the future. When features are implemented quickly without adherence to standards or principles, these inadequate decisions add up and can cause larger problems in the future. Bugs, unreadable code, poor architecture, degraded performance, security implications, and more can arise due to poorly written code. In software with high technical debt, maintenance costs can be high, and without any actions taken, the applications may end up needing a complete rebuild to reduce or eliminate technical debt.
