Abstract

Editors' Note: The next three pieces are intended to be read in tandem. The first piece is a typical academic persuasive piece. The second uses the same research, but presents the argument to a more diverse public audience, readers of the online news site, Vox.The third piece analyzes the rhetorical choices Gregorio made when writing her Vox piece. Each piece address the same general topic: the importance of communicating science to a public audience.By reading all three pieces together, you will get a sense of the kind of deep research and rhetorical flexibility that is required for writing to both academic and public audiences. When comparing the first two pieces, focus on the kinds of information Gregorio includes when writing to an academic audience versus the information she highlights when writing to a public audience. In addition, the final analysis will demonstrate that Gregorio made deliberate choices when revising her work to account for a new audience and genre. The "Consider This" questions will appear at the end of the third piece.
