Abstract

Previous research has indicated strong gender stereotyping of musical instruments, potentially reflecting some combination of instrument characteristics and socialized associations. In this study, students in grades 4-6 express preferences among unfamiliar instruments drawn from diverse music traditions—a global orchestra—in order to disambiguate pre-existing associations from intrinsic features.
