Abstract

Prairie Surrealism: Iceberg and White Square arrests the eye through radical simplicity. A luminous iceberg rendered in deep green and white occupies just the lower third of the composition, while the rest of the picture plane dissolves into pure, silent void. It is a gesture deeply familiar to anyone shaped by the northern plains, where a single form against an expansive emptiness can carry the full weight of the landscape. That tension between presence and absence, between the seen and the suggested, is where Prairie Surrealism lives. As an artist-scholar whose studio practice is aligned with his teaching, Hebert brings to this collection a testament to the rigor and imagination that define creative research at UND.
