Abstract
Increasing volatility and complexity in supply chains have created a need for more structured and formal integration across planning levels to ensure stronger organisational alignment in Supply Chain Planning (SCP). The research originates from the focal company’s identified gap between its tactical Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP) process and operational execution. On this basis, the focal company facilitated this master’s thesis to gain an overview of its opportunities to develop a Sales and Operations Execution (S&OE) process into its Barrier Coating supply chain. A qualitative study employing the Constructive Research Approach (CRA) and a literature review was conducted. The latter served as the basis for the theoretical framework that encompassed the empirical research. Data were collected through thirteen semi-structured interviews supported by ethnographic observations, which enabled obtaining a comprehensive view of the Barrier Coating SCP practices. The data analysis revealed three interconnected challenges that hinder effective short-term SCP: insufficient S&OE inputs, compound complexity, and compromised order steering. These challenges collectively hinder cross-functional transparency and constrain the focal company’s ability to ensure alignment between planning levels. As a result, a Barrier Coating S&OE process development framework is presented in this thesis. The framework tailors the characteristics of an S&OE process into the focal company’s unique context of two simultaneous S&OP processes. By following the framework and emphasising the critical development areas, the focal company can strengthen alignment between tactical S&OP plans and operational level execution.
