Big Hearts and Cold Snow
Abstract
Reflective Memo: This essay was constructed in order to inform the audience about a certain subculture. The subculture I chose was ski patroller.Writing this essay was actually very easy for me because I already knew so much about the subculture and, as I had an extremely knowledgeable interviewee, I was able to learn even more.As far as my writing process went, I first had an hour-long interview with my stepfather and, afterwards, the essay practically wrote itself. The only challenge I faced while writing this essay was organizing it in a manner that made sense; however, this was not hard to overcome. My favorite part about this essay is the anecdote at the beginning.I believe that it was an effective way to really capture the attention of my audience. Consider This• You may find that your essays gain rhetorical strength through variation in both paragraphing and sentence structure. This author tends to follow a somewhat repetitive form in which she uses a similar construction in successive sentences. How might this essay change if she moved toward a more varied composition?• Though Johnson profiles her stepfather, she uses his experience to comment on the vocation of ski patroller in a more general sense. How does her stepfather's experience work to support her overall definition of the vocation?
