Abstract

This project is part of a FAPESP-funded Postdoctoral Fellowship (Process nº 2023/05865-1) linked to the broader Amazônia+10 research initiative, “Inovação para Criação de Valores Sustentáveis: Entendendo as Cadeias Globais de Valor na Amazônia.” The research examines how Global Value Chains (GVCs) anchored in the Brazilian Amazon interact with public, private, and hybrid governance systems under increasing environmental and regulatory pressures. Focusing primarily on the beef cattle value chain in the State of Pará, the project develops and empirically applies an integrated analytical framework combining Global Value Chain (GVC) and Socio-Ecological Systems (SES) approaches. Through qualitative fieldwork, semi-structured interviews, document analysis, and stakeholder workshops, the research investigates governance fragmentation, digital traceability systems, subnational policy dynamics, and the implications of emerging international regulations such as the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). The project contributes to advancing theoretical understanding of sustainability governance in natural-resource value chains and supports policy-relevant dialogue on deforestation-free supply chains in the Amazon.
