“Bu Şehrin Mutfaklarında Bıçak Yok” Adlı Çeviri Romanda Deyimlerin Aktarımı: Çeviri Stratejileri ve Çevirmenin Erek Odaklı Yaklaşımı Bağlamında Bir İnceleme
Abstract
In an increasingly globalized world, the tendency and need for communication among communities with diverse linguistic and cultural structures are steadily growing. The effort and necessity for societies with distinctly different spoken and written languages to communicate with one another have been fundamental factors in the emergence of translation studies. Serving as a bridge between societies, languages, and cultures, translation studies has emerged as a distinct academic discipline. One of the most sensitive issues in the translation process is the accurate rendering—either in form or meaning—of proverbs, idioms, and aphorisms shaped by historical experience, cultural accumulation, belief systems, and everyday practices of communities. From this perspective, Turkish and Arab societies, which have coexisted side by side and in close interaction for centuries throughout history, have profoundly influenced one another in terms of language, culture, literature, belief, and thought. This article aims to analyze the Turkish translations of the idioms found in the novel Lā Sakākīn fī Maṭābikh Hādhihi al-Madīna by the Arab author Khaled Khalifa. In the study, the translations of idioms in the target text are examined within the framework of Mona Baker’s idiom translation strategies and Peter Newmark’s target-language-oriented idiomatic translation approach.
