Exploring Nineteenth-Century Spanish Chapbooks through Topics and Places
Abstract
This article presents the results of a hackathon held in Geneva and devoted to the dynamics of cultural globalization. It is based on a large Spanish-language corpus produced by the Geneva-based project Desenrollando el Cordel. The corpus consists of pliegos, that is, printed sheets of popular literature intended for sale and dissemination through itinerant peddling. Using topic modeling methods, we analyze the main themes developed in these texts. This approach is complemented by an examination of co-occurrence networks associated with several emblematic locations—most notably Havana and Algiers—in order to shed light on the representations of these spaces in nineteenth-century Spanish literature.
