Jag springer alltså finns jag : En kvalitativ studie om unga kvinnors uttryck av självrepresentation på appen Strava.
Abstract
The following essay is a phenomenological qualitative study, based on five semi-structured interviews with women between the ages of 22-25. The study’s aim is to answer questions about young women’s self-representation and usage of the social fitness tracker app “Strava”. Focusing on the unique combination of digital practices and physical activity that the platform offers, the study uses Erving Goffman's theory “The presentation of self in everyday life (1956)” combined with Jill Walker Rettberg's theoretical frameworks presented in “Seeing Ourselves Through Technology: How We Use Selfies, Blogs, and Wearable Devices to See and Shape Ourselves (2014)” to conduct a thematic analysis on the collected material. The study's findings show that the young women reflected most about Strava's differences from other social media platforms, need for validation, tendencies of comparison with others, as well as activity tracking invoking a sense of tangibility. Meaning that the study shows how Strava use not only creates a need for further usage, but also affects the young women's contemplations in areas of comparison, motivation and self-image.
