DSI at 10: Charting a Decade of Digital Sequence Information International Governance
Abstract
This hybrid event brings together experts working on different aspects of international biodiversity law where Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) frameworks are currently in force. Many of these frameworks created with material access to physical genetic resources in mind have had to adapt (or not) to include digital sequence information (DSI). If we agree that genetic resources and digital sequence information are separate but linked entities, then ABS frameworks must evolve to include informatic extraction of value from genetic resources. However, adaptive measures and regulatory margins are squeezed by existing norms such as sovereignty, material access, utilization and a conventional focus on ‘users’ of genetic resources.
