Abstract

Diabetes mellitus, as a chronic disease, poses challenges to the person in the field of self-management and requires a different approach. Nurses assume a privileged position in the provision of person-centred care. However, empowering the person with diabetes mellitus is challenging and requires a combination of skills in order to increase motivation for self-care, empower the person for self-management, involve them in their care as well as make informed choices. There are some strategies that can help nurses empower people with diabetes, and it is important to recognize them to maximize well-being and self-care, prevent complications, as well as improve the quality of nursing care. This scoping review aims to identify the interventions involved in the empowerment of people with diabetes in nursing practice. At the same time, this review aims to identify gaps in scientific knowledge where more research is needed.
