Abstract

How can we ensure all students have access to our course materials? One way is by providing an open educational resource that is free and easily accessible to students! In our session, we'll describe the journey of reclaiming publishing rights from a textbook publisher and crafting an easily accessible online textbook. We'll talk challenges encountered, student reception, teaching assistant buy in, editing frequency, blackboard integration, and successes seen in our 5 year journey (so far). We'll also spend some time in active learning activities with our colleagues and exploring the possibility of putting our content on the web in a similar fashion to the way we've resurrected the amazing content of our course. With small changes, we can continue to make big impacts in our classrooms, labs, and beyond! If you'd like to explore the online textbook, it can be viewed at the following link: https://sites.google.com/view/uofscbiol302labmanual/home?authuser=0.
