Designing a Bridge between the Business Model Canvas and ArchiMate: A Case Study from the Construction Industry
Abstract
The Business Model Canvas (BMC) is widely regarded as one of the most prominent business model frameworks. Despite its extensive use by scholars and practitioners, the BMC remains essentially a visual tool lacking formal semantics, which limits its ability to represent business model dynamics. Archi, the open-source modelling tool dedicated to the Enterprise Architecture modelling language ArchiMate, offers a feature that enables users to draw Business Model Canvases. However, this functionality provides only a graphical representation, disconnected from ArchiMate’s underlying concepts. Building on previous research, this study designs a conceptual bridge between the BMC and ArchiMate. The proposed mapping was applied to a case study from the construction industry to illustrate its relevance and practical value. The research follows a Design Science approach and contributes to the operationalisation of the BMC (relevance) through a rigorous conceptual mapping (rigor).
