Abstract

Given the omnipresence of digital technology, it is crucial to better understand what challenges couples and families face in an increasingly digitalized world, how they cope with these challenges, as well as how family members may simultaneously reap the benefits of mobile communication technology. Hence, the overarching two aims of the present “eMotion” study are to better understand (1) how various forms of smartphone usage may help or harm individual, relational, and physiological functioning in daily life, and (2) how stress dynamics affect both partners’ physical, emotional, and relational wellbeing, and whether (online) interpersonal emotion regulation may potentially buffer these effects.
