Underwraps: How Material Barriers Affect Bone Decay
Abstract
This study examines how materials commonly encountered in forensic investigations influence early bone decomposition and the surrounding soil microenvironment. By analyzing how different coverings alter factors such as moisture retention, oxygen availability, and microbial activity, this research explores the extent to which these materials can accelerate or inhibit decomposition processes. Special attention is given to changes in mass loss, mold growth, and surface degradtion as indictors of microbial interaction and decay progression. the findings from this study aim to contribute to the development of a comprehensive reference database that can assist forensic investigators and law enforcement in interpreting decomposition patterns under varying environmental conditions. Ultimately, this resaerch seeks to improve the accuracy of postmortem interval estimation while also expanding understanding of how human introduced materials impact natural soil ecosytems.
