Animal Reproductive Technology: Innovation for Increasing Productivity
Abstract
1.1 Introduction Reproduction is a fundamental biological process for living things, including livestock, as it ensures the continuity of the species from generation to generation. In the context of livestock farming, reproduction is not only related to the ability of livestock to produce offspring but also plays a direct role in determining the productivity and efficiency of livestock farming. Reproductive success contributes to increased birth rates, the quality of offspring produced, and the spacing of calvings.calving interval), as well as the age of livestock puberty, which ultimately impacts the economic profits of livestock farmers (Giannone 2023; Iskandar 2022). Reproductive efficiency is an important indicator in the sustainability of livestock businesses, because low reproductive performance is often associated with increased rates ofservice per conceptionand decreased conception rates (Cartwright 2023; Mastuti 2023). Optimal reproductive performance is greatly influenced by a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental aspects of reproduction, including the anatomy and physiology of the reproductive organs, hormonal regulatory mechanisms, the dynamics of the estrous cycle, the fertilization process, embryonic and fetal development during pregnancy, and birth. Each of these components works in an integrated manner and forms the basis for understanding whether the reproductive process is proceeding normally or is impaired. This understanding is increasingly important because even minor disturbances in the hormonal cycle or gamete quality can significantly impact pregnancy rates (Fernández-Fuertes 2023; Gordon 2017). Reproductive science is the foundation for the application of modern reproductive technologies, such as artificial insemination, estrus synchronization, superovulation, embryo transfer, in vitro fertilization, and semen cryopreservation. These technologies have been shown to improve calving efficiency, accelerate genetic improvement, and increase farmer income when implemented with good management (Cartwright and Rhoads 2023; Khan 2023; Liu et al. 2022). However, the success of these technologies remains highly dependent on an understanding of reproductive physiology and quality management at the farmer level (Gordon 2017; Mastuti 2023).
