Abstract

This study examines the hybrid warfare strategy, one of the new generation warfare approaches that emerged alongside the transformation of war in the modern era. The primary focus of the research is to reveal the effectiveness of hybrid warfare strategies. In this context, the study is built on the hypothesis that the non‑lethal methods of hybrid warfare produce faster and more decisive outcomes than the effects generated by conventional weapons. Within the scope of the study, answers are sought to the questions of why hybrid warfare is less costly than conventional war and how it enables higher strategic gains. Structured on the basis of qualitative research methods, the study relies predominantly on secondary sources such as books, journal articles, monographs, theses, and newspaper articles. To concretize the theoretical framework in practical terms, comparative case analyses were conducted on the annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014 and the Russia–Ukraine War that began in 2022. While the annexation of Crimea represents a successful and recent example of hybrid warfare, the Russia–Ukraine War is significant for demonstrating the transformation of Moscow’s hybrid strategy into a conventional war. The research aims to contribute to both the hybrid warfare literature and the broader field of international security studies at theoretical and practical levels.
