Abstract

This master’s thesis explores the impact from the fire investigations by the Swedish Accident Investigation Authority (SHK) on fire safety in Sweden. Through a mapping survey and a qualitative interview study, it is found that it is often difficult to identify clear connections between the investigations’ safety recommendations and real improvements to fire safety, due to long time spans and multiple organisations involved. However, some recommendations have led to tangible change, while others were dismissed at an early stage. Furthermore, SHK is generally perceived as an influential authority by the interviewees, but there is also a disconnect in the communication between SHK and the field where interviewees indicate that relevant and useful information is lost on the way between investigation and implementation of action.
