Abstract

We present the SHELL Computer, a radical computing architecture derived from the SHELL-AGENT dynamical systems framework for symmetry discovery and restoration. Unlike conventional von Neumann machines that store and manipulate symbolic representations through sequential instruction execution, the SHELL Computer performs computation through continuous-time dynamics on a state manifold, where programs correspond to attractors in the flow, execution emerges from symmetry restoration, and planning arises from geometric integration over reachable sets. We develop the complete mathematical foundation of this architecture, including the Lie algebra of generators, deficit-based control laws, Hebbian learning mechanisms, and the Neural Free Cellular Automata (NFCA) implementation that enables practical hardware realization. We significantly extend the treatment of planning, introducing Symmetrical Volume Convolution (SVC) as a geometric alternative to combinatorial search, hierarchical planning via symmetry fibre bundles, and phase-based position encoding for sequence representation. The architecture exhibits massive parallelism, learning as a physical process, and computation through relaxation rather than sequential steps. We then address the fundamental question of computational power: Is the SHELL Computer Turing complete? We prove that under idealized continuous conditions with infinite precision, the SHELL Computer can simulate any Turing machine through appropriate encoding of tape states as manifold points and transitions as generator flows. However, we identify critical physical constraints-finite precision, analog noise, and attractor stability-that create a complexity-theoretic separation: the physically realizable SHELL Computer operates within the complexity class BPP (bounded-error probabilistic polynomial time) rather than the full power of Turing machines. We also demonstrate that planning tasks that are exponential in conventional models become polynomial or even constant-time in the SHELL framework through geometric methods. As a concrete application, we present SHELL/Python-a novel approach to Python compilation where programs become attractor landscapes rather than instruction sequences-demonstrating the practical viability of symmetry-based computation for real-world programming languages. This establishes the SHELL Computer as a physically-grounded analog computing paradigm with profound advantages for symmetry-rich problems, particularly in planning and optimization, while revealing fundamental trade-offs between physical implementability and theoretical computational universality. 2 Mathematical Foundations of the SHELL Computer The State Manifold Definition 1 (State Manifold).
