Abstract

Limb reconstruction in a resource-limited environment is a real challenge to health authorities, especially with the increasing number of patients. In the Middle East and low-income countries, the incidence of congenital deformities, complex trauma, war injuries, and posttraumatic complications is high. It is important to be guided by the best possible scientific evidence concerning the patient's opinion and available resources. Amputation is not accepted as a treatment option even in neglected complex cases. Therefore, new classifications were developed and current management methods were modified to meet patient expectations. With developing experience with a large number of patients, it is now possible to discuss strategies for overcoming these obstacles and achieving the best results using reproducible protocols. However, because of the variety of problems, the reconstruction method frequently has to be designed on a case-by-case basis.
