Abstract

A Amazônia é a maior floresta tropical do mundo e vem sofrendo grandes impactos devido à atividade humana. ABSTRACT: Methane (CH4) is considered the second most important greenhouse gas, after carbon dioxide (CO2). After a long period of stability between 2000 and 2007, global methane concentrations have been increasing every year, and this increase has been mainly related to increased emissions from anthropogenic sources. The Amazon is the largest tropical forest in the world and has been suffering major impacts due to human activity. In this study, we present data obtained from vertical profiles measured between 2010 and 2023, which allow us to understand the role of the Amazon Forest in the global growth of CH4 emissions, as well as the impact of reduced rainfall on regional emissions. The growth rate for the four study sites TAB_TEF_CZS (northwestern Amazon), SAN (northeastern Amazon), RBA (southwestern Amazon), and ALF (southeastern Amazon) was close to the global rate, 9.7 ppb/year. The vertical profiles indicate that the TAB_TEF_CZS region showed high enrichment, with the highest values near the surface (below 1.5 km) in 2021, which was 34% higher than the average for the period. In the SAN region, the highest enrichment was observed in 2022, which was much higher than the others and 28% higher than the average. The RBA and ALF regions do not show the same variability as the regions in the north of the Amazon; however, we also observed enrichment near the surface, which shows that these regions are also methane emitters. The annual average methane emissions in the northeastern region (SAN) of the Amazon between 2010 and 2023 was 52.5 ± 5.4 mg CH4/m2.year. The average CH4 emissions in the northwest region (TAB_TEF_CZS) of the Amazon were 16.2±1.8 mg CH4/m2.year. The southern regions of the Amazon (RBA and ALF) had lower annual average values for the 14 years of the study, with 14.0±2.0 mg CH4/m2.year in RBA and 13.4±0.7 mg CH4/m2.year for ALF. The methane balance of the Amazon throughout the study period was 39.1±4.8 Tg CH4/year, contributing 11% of total tropical methane emissions and 7% of the global methane balance for top-down estimates. The year with the highest CH4 emissions in the Amazon was 2023, in the three calculated flux components: total, biogenic (non fire), and fire (from biomass burning), which were, respectively, 27%, 81%, and 19% above the average for the period. We found that precipitation has been decreasing over the 14 years of study in the four regions studied. SAN had a 18% reduction in precipitation from 2010 to 2023, while in TAB_TEF_CZS, the reduction was 11%. The RBA region had the largest reduction in precipitation of the four locations studied, 23%, while in ALF the reduction was 16%. We observed intense variability in biogenic (non fire) fluxes in the four regions, as well as variability in precipitation, but in general, this has been decreasing. However, we cannot make the same statement for CH4 fluxes, nor can we relate them directly to precipitation variation. From 2010 to 2023, the cattle herd in the Amazon grew by 40%, indicating that changes in methane emissions in the Amazon may be mostly anthropogenic in origin, with livestock farming playing a central role. When we look at these elements simultaneouslydecreased precipitation and agricultural expansionmethane emission values are not keeping pace with climate variables. Thus, we see that the growth of human activities in the region, especially after 2019, keeps the Amazon as one of the largest sources of methane emissions globally.
