Opere e spazi, logiche di acquisizione e modelli museali del Contemporary Sculpture Garden dell’Universita di Teramo
Abstract
The essay analyses the genesis, structure, and functions of the Contemporary Sculpture Garden – Unite Museum of the University of Teramo, inaugurated in 2018 and now among the most significant experiences within the Italian landscape of university museums devoted to contemporary art. Following an introductory reflection on the role of university museums as spaces for preservation, education, and third mission engagement, the text investigates the logics of acquisition and the relationship between the museum and its territory. Works by Venanzo Crocetti, Diego Esposito, and the collective project Il Cielo d’Italia express a strong sense of local identity rooted in the Abruzzo region, while the donations by Immacolata Datti and Alejandro Marmo broaden its international scope. Particular attention is devoted to the architectural context of the Colleparco campus, designed by Marco Tamino, and to the museum’s distinctive display model, which transforms the entire university complex into a living, daily museum. The case of Teramo is compared with other Italian experiences—particularly the Aratro Contemporary Art Centre of the University of Molise, the CAMUSAC of Cassino, the MLAC of Sapienza University of Rome, and the newly founded Museum of Contemporary Art of the University of Verona—highlighting the centrality of education and public engagement. Through projects such as toMetarte, VRSciT, SMICUPA, and A tutto DAMS!, the museum asserts itself as a laboratory of interdisciplinary research and civic participation, combining digital innovation, heritage enhancement, and territorial identity.
