Handedness of acclaimed architects

Abstract

The belief that left handers are disproportionately often represented among architects has inspired both scientific hypotheses and popular stereotypes. However, a comprehensive review of existing research reveals inconsistent results and generally small sample sizes, even when aggregated across studies. The here documented study revisits the claim by examining the hand preference of internationally acclaimed architects. That is, relevant architects were identified by consulting the lists of winners of prestigious architecture awards and featured architects of influential architectural magazines. Using publicly (online) available photos and videos, the present study was not able to support the notion of a significant overrepresentation of left-handed or ambidextrous individuals among acclaimed architects. The analysis scripts and extracted data are here provided. The raw data was not shared here due to copyright concerns. I may share the file for scientific purpose upon request.
