Hypersexual, Illegitimate and Dangerous: Linking Self-Control with Moral Judgements of Bisexuality
Abstract
In contemporary theories of moral psychology, there is a hunt for a common mechanism underlying moral judgements. Particularly, there is a search for harm resulting from 'harmless' and 'indulgent' behaviours which are judged to be morally undersireable. Moral Disciplining Theory (MDT) posits that Purity violations are judged as harmful due to a perceived reduction in self-control and social cooperativeness. We investigated the following questions: Is there an association between scores on the Moral Foundations Questionnaire (MFQ2) Purity subscale and moral character judgements of bisexuals; Is that association mediated by the perception of the bisexual person's ability to control their behaviour and resist temptation.
