Pausing to breathe
Abstract
Data and analysis code can be found under the Files tab for a study on the coordination of breathing and language during speaking. Competing hypotheses are tested in 2 experiments: A vertical model hypothesis where coordination is an epiphenomenon of cognitive-linguistic effects on pausing, and a horizontal model hypothesis where coordination is due to a functional link between breathing and the cognitive processes of language planning. The results provide evidence for the horizontal hypothesis and undermine the vertical one.
