Insubordination pathways in three millennia of Greek : sources, analogical changes and pragmatic enrichment
Abstract
In this contribution, I present evidence from about three millenia of Greek for the multiple sources and diachronic processes involved in insubordinate constructions, shifting away from a recent focus on their origins alone. I focus on three insubordinate patterns that are attested across different diachronic periods: (i) conditional insubordination, (ii) infinitival insubordination, and (iii) complementizer insubordination with (hí)na. I demonstrate that insubordinate usages may be created analogically (e.g. from other insubordinate constructions and/or based on related constructions in the system), they can diachronically expand their role within a TAM syste (taking over TAM and speech act functions), and may eventually get diaphasically restricted (e.g. to higher and/or specialized registers) before falling out of use.
