Advancing Grief Literacy: A Scoping Review of Approaches and Practices Protocol
Abstract
This scoping review represents the first comprehensive global examination of grief literacy initiatives, programmes designed to improve people's knowledge, skills, and values for supporting individuals experiencing grief. Recognising that most grieving people rely on informal support from family, friends, and community members rather than professional intervention, this research will systematically map existing initiatives across diverse populations, settings, and contexts to understand how they operationalise grief literacy, what approaches they use, and how they are evaluated. The review will identify critical gaps in provision, reveal promising practices, and produce practical guidance for program developers, policymakers, educators, and organisations seeking to strengthen their communities' capacity to provide compassionate grief support. By establishing this foundational understanding of the field, the review aims to inform evidence-based development of future initiatives and contribute to building a grief-literate society capable of supporting its members through the universal experiences of loss and grief.
