Prensa y protesta social: El paro cívico nacional de 1977 en Colombia
Abstract
This study analyzes the coverage of the major political press of the social mobilization process known as the Civic Strike of September 14, 1977. The discourse of the newspapers El Tiempo, El Espectador, and El Siglo is reviewed, allowing us to establish three hegemonic journalistic positions: 1) media denial of the strike, 2) stigmatization of the actors and organizers, and 3) justification of the government’s repressive action. At the same time, a comparison is made with the disruptive discourse developed by the newspaper La República, which defended collective action and questioned the national government, unleashing the combativeness of the other newspapers as part of their political-editorial commitment to oppose the government of Alfonso López Michelsen.
