Abstract

The Ultimate Design Machine is a discussion of how generative AI can be integrated into the initial design stage through a co-creative and human-focused design approach. In spite of the widespread use of AI tools at later stages, the practical and methodological application in the Discover and Define phases is very little studied. The project is a research-through-design project, based on the Double Diamond model. It examines the partnership between designers and generative AI where AI is seen as an assistant co-creator rather than a replacement. The work is based on literature on AI Design support Systems, co-creation and Critical design. A provocative prototype was a slot-machine-like interface that the study came up with. Users are able to activate AI-based design generation and retain human agency through curation and decision making. The tests that are provided to the public reveal that AI is perceived by users as an imaginative partner. Ethics, responsibility and creativity in the human remain focal. Every method, tool, and reflection is recorded in order to ensure transparency, reproducibility, and design instruction. https://github.com/kawwan/The-ultimate-Design-machine-2.0
