Qualificação da vegetação secundária do Bioma Mata Atlântica
Abstract
ABSTRACT: Secondary vegetation (SV) refers to areas where forest cover has regenerated following deforestation or degradation of primary vegetation. Due to the importance of this vegetation and the ecosystem services it provides, information on the occurrence and characterization of secondary vegetation areas is essential for public policies related to conservation, reforestation, and sustainable management. This document presents the analyses and results of the qualitative assessment of secondary vegetation in the Atlantic Forest biome. Based on secondary vegetation mapping by FUNCATE from 2018 to 2022, the analyses are grounded in the calculation of the age of SV fragments and landscape metrics such as size, structure, and connectivity. The results include landscape ecology metrics (area, core area, fractal dimension index, Euclidean nearest-neighbor distance, and type of the nearest neighboring vegetation); the composition of the polygons in terms of land tenure categories within the Atlantic Forest biome; and the vegetation age. A total of 177,443 secondary vegetation polygons were analyzed, with areas ranging from 2 to over 1,000 hectares. There is a predominance of SV polygons with areas up to 20 ha. Regarding core area, the different edge distances analyzed revealed significant variations in landscape structure and fragment composition, with a notable contrast between the results from the 30 m and 120 m edge effects. The majority of SV areas are adjacent to primary vegetation, indicating a well-connected landscape. In terms of age, fragments of 1 and 4 years are the most numerous, both in quantity and in territorial dominance. As for land tenure categories, SV in the Atlantic Forest biome is predominantly found on Unregistered Land and Private Property (SIGEF data). Analyses of this nature are important as a support for decision-makers and in the development of public policies, such as determining priority areas for environmental conservation and/or recovery. The results presented are the product of a partnership between INPE and the Ministry of the Environment (MMA) to meet the Federal Government's demand for the qualification of these regenerating areas, within the scope of the National Native Vegetation Recovery Plan (PLANAVEG).
