Abstract
The article is devoted to analyzing the role of railway infrastructure in the formation and transformation of depressed areas in the city of Odesa. It examines the historical stages of railway network development, its impact on the city’s spatial structure, and current challenges related to the degradation of industrial zones, as well as transport and social isolation. Special attention is given to districts such as Peresyp, Moldavanka, and Seredn’ofontanska (Sakhalinchyk), which emerged under the influence of railway hubs and are now characterized by poor urban conditions, environmental issues, and socio-economic decline. The article presents possible strategies for the reorganization and revitalization of these areas through the modernization of railway infrastructure, repurposing of unused facilities, and integration of railway hubs with the urban transport system. It also considers the potential relocation of the “Odesa-Holovna” railway station outside the historical center as a strategic step toward improving the urban environment and restoring the city’s social and spatial unity. The study highlights the need for a comprehensive urban approach and interdisciplinary planning in the reconstruction of transport-related areas under the principles of sustainable development.
