Abstract
The article examines the phenomenon of the indeterminacy of architectural scale as one of the key categories of artistic expression in contemporary architecture, particularly in the works of leading deconstructivist architects — Frank Gehry, Daniel Libeskind, and Zaha Hadid. The study analyzes the relationship between scale, human proportionality, and architectural form, as well as the factors that lead to the loss of readable scale: the absence of conventional articulation, smooth or mirrored surfaces, and the neutralization of architectural details and contextual reference points. Special attention is given to the “shy elephant” method, which enables the masking of a building’s actual dimensions by visually “dissolving” it into the environment. Based on a comparative analysis of the three architects’ works, the specific features of their approaches to geometry, scale, materials, structural logic, and contextual interaction are identified. It is concluded that the indeterminacy of architectural scale is not merely a technical or compositional device but also an important means of shaping the emotional and semantic impact of architectural space.
